Search is no longer only ten blue links. A growing share of queries are answered directly by AI - Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot - which read the web, synthesise an answer, and cite a handful of sources. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content the source those engines quote. This guide covers what it is, how it relates to LLMO and GEO, and what the evidence says works.
What is answer engine optimization?
AEO is optimising content so AI answer engines can find, understand and cite it. Where classic SEO targets a ranking position, AEO targets a citation - being the source an AI names when it answers a question. The two overlap heavily, but AEO puts more weight on clear, extractable, trustworthy answers.
AEO, LLMO, GEO: the same idea, different labels
You’ll see several acronyms for closely related ideas: AEO (answer engine optimization), LLMO (LLM optimization - making content easy for large language models to read, understand and cite) and GEO (generative engine optimization, a term popularised by a 2023 research paper). They overlap almost entirely: all describe optimising content to be found and cited by AI, not just ranked by classic search. Don’t get lost in the terminology; focus on the practices.
What the evidence says works
The best-known study is GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (accepted to KDD 2024). On its own benchmark of queries, rewriting content to cite sources, add quotations from credible sources and add statistics were the top-performing methods, with relative visibility gains of 30-40% on its main metric. Keyword stuffing, the classic SEO habit, did not perform well. It is one study on one benchmark, but it matches the practical levers below:
- Answer first. Lead with a direct, concise answer to the question - then elaborate. A short, self-contained answer is easier to quote than one buried after the build-up.
- Quotable structure. Short sentences, clear headings, lists and tables, so each passage makes sense on its own.
- Real evidence. Statistics, data, quotations and named sources, rather than unsupported opinion.
- Question-shaped headings. Headings that match how people actually ask help readers and engines map your content to a query.
- Freshness and trust. Keep key pages up to date and show who wrote them and why they know the subject.
How AEO differs from SEO
You don’t abandon SEO for AEO - the technical foundation (crawlability, structured data, site health) matters for both. For Google specifically, its guidance on AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: the usual SEO best practices apply. Where AEO shifts emphasis is from ranking a page to earning a sentence-level citation, and from Google alone to a spread of AI surfaces.
Tip: Start with your best-performing pages and move the direct answer to the top. If a reader - or an AI - has to wade through three paragraphs of preamble to find the point, rewrite so the answer comes first. It is a low-risk change that helps human readers too.
Let AI crawlers in
An engine can only cite what its crawler can read. Keep your main content in the HTML rather than only in client-side JavaScript, and check robots.txt before blocking AI bots wholesale. Some providers run separate crawlers for different jobs: OpenAI’s documentation, for example, says OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT’s search features, while GPTBot relates to training, and each can be allowed or blocked on its own.
Don’t forget the machine-readable layer
AEO isn’t only about prose. Structured data that matches the visible text helps machines understand your entities. An llms.txt file gives AI tools a curated map of your best content; Google says Google Search ignores it, and few other providers document whether they read it, so treat it as a quick, low-cost extra rather than a ranking lever.
Frequently asked questions
What is answer engine optimization?
AEO is optimising content so AI answer engines - ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews - can find, understand and cite it, targeting a citation rather than a ranking position.
What is LLMO, and how is it different from AEO and GEO?
LLMO, or LLM optimization, is making content easy for large language models to read, understand and cite. AEO and GEO describe the same goal under different names, so focus on the practices rather than the labels.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO builds on SEO. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond normal SEO best practices; AEO adds emphasis on answer-first, extractable, evidence-backed content across AI surfaces.
How do I get cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?
Answer questions directly and early, use clear extractable structure, back claims with data and sources, keep your content in the HTML, and allow the providers’ search crawlers in robots.txt.
