The audit checks explained

Every audit runs its checks in 22 scored areas, plus several analysis sections that are reported but not scored. This page explains what each area looks at, how issues are labelled, and a few thresholds worth knowing.

The 22 scored areas

Each area scores the share of its checks that pass. The overall score is the weighted average - see Understanding your audit score.

AreaWeightWhat it looks at
Performance10%PageSpeed Insights for mobile and desktop; the mobile score is used directly.

Forms1%Whether form endpoints respond.

Severity labels

Each issue is labelled so you know what to fix first. The label is based on what the issue is about:

  • Critical - server errors (5xx), SSL and certificate problems, sites not on HTTPS, redirect loops, and pages blocked from crawling or indexing that look important.
  • Warning - most SEO issues: missing or duplicate titles and descriptions, missing or multiple H1s, broken links and pages, missing canonicals, redirect chains, hreflang errors, schema errors, slow pages, mixed content, soft 404s and similar.
  • Notice - everything else, including missing security headers such as HSTS, CSP and X-Frame-Options, which matter for security but not directly for rankings.

Severity decides the order in reports and the dashboard. It does not change the score.

Thresholds worth knowing

CheckFlagged when
Title lengthShorter than 10 or longer than 60 characters.
Meta description lengthShorter than 50 or longer than 160 characters.
Redirect chain2 or more hops before the final page.
Thin contentUnder 100 words (very thin) or 100-199 words (thin).
Soft 404The page answers 200 but shows error wording on a short page, or has almost no text and an empty or tiny title.
Core Web VitalsGoogle’s bands: LCP above 2.5 s, CLS above 0.1 and INP above 200 ms need improvement; INP above 500 ms is poor.
Character limits are guidelines. Google sets no fixed limit for titles or descriptions - it truncates them to fit the screen. The thresholds above flag the cases most likely to be cut off or too thin to be useful.

Sections that are reported but not scored

  • Accessibility - its own 0-100 score from 8 weighted checks (alt text, H1s, heading order, empty links, the main landmark, generic link text and form labels).
  • Duplicate content - near-duplicate pages, compared on titles, descriptions, headings and text.
  • Internal linking - orphan and underlinked pages with suggested links and anchor text.
  • Schema recommendations - ready-to-copy JSON-LD per page. See Schema Markup Generator.
  • Search Console and GA4 - clicks, queries, CTR opportunities, cannibalization and traffic, when connected.
  • Content decay, JavaScript rendering and topical map - on the Pro and Agency plans and during the trial. JavaScript rendering checks one page per URL template, up to 12 per audit.

Fixing issues in bulk

Many issues come from one template - for example, every product page missing a meta description. Reports group affected URLs by URL pattern where they can, so you can fix the template once instead of each page separately.
