An audit crawls a site, runs the checks, and gives you a score, a prioritised list of issues and downloadable reports. This guide walks through the New Audit form, what happens while it runs, and how to read the results.
Before you start
An audit works without any connections, but some sections only fill in when data sources are connected:
- Search Console and Google Analytics 4 - clicks, impressions, queries, traffic and the sections built on them (rank tracking, CTR opportunities, content decay). Connect them in App Settings → Google Services, or with Sign in with Google right on the New Audit form. See Connecting Google Search Console.
- Your AI key - for the AI summaries and AI tools. See Setting up your AI key.
Starting a new audit
On your first sign-in, a short setup asks for the website, offers to connect Google, and starts the first audit for you. After that, use the form:
Open New Audit
Click New Audit at the top of the sidebar.
Choose crawl or list mode
Crawl mode starts from the URL you enter and follows the sitemap and internal links. List mode audits only the exact URLs you paste, one per line, with no link discovery.
Enter the URL and set the page limit
Type the full address, including https://. Set Max pages to crawl (default 50). Your plan sets the ceiling: 100 pages on the trial, 500 on Starter, 2,000 on Pro and up to 60,000 on Agency.
Pick the Google properties (optional)
If a Google account is connected, choose the Search Console and GA4 properties, or leave them on Auto-detect to match the audited domain.
Click "Run Audit"
Progress appears live while the crawl and checks run.
Optional settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Capture page screenshots | Saves screenshots of pages. Adds about 1-2 minutes. |
| Client info | A client name and notes. Both are printed on the PDF cover. |
| User-Agent (Advanced crawl options) | Crawl as the default browser, Googlebot (desktop or mobile), Bingbot, Chrome, iPhone Safari or a custom string. |
| Delay between batches | Slows the crawl down for fragile or rate-limited sites (0 = no delay). |
| Include / exclude URL patterns | Regular expressions, one per line, to limit which URLs are crawled. |
| Custom extractions | CSS selectors or XPath; the extracted value is stored for every page. |
What happens during an audit
- Crawl - pages are fetched in parallel from the sitemap and internal links, up to your page limit.
- Checks - on-page, technical, link, security, structured data and other checks run on the crawled pages.
- Performance - PageSpeed Insights data for mobile and desktop.
- Data sources - Search Console, Analytics and other connected sources are pulled in.
- Score and reports - the score is calculated and the results are saved.
How long it takes depends on the number of pages, how fast the site responds and which data sources are connected. Small sites usually finish in a few minutes.
Reading the results
The results are grouped into six tabs: Overview, Content & On-Page, Technical, Crawl & Links, Performance and Data Sources. Start with Overview: it shows the score and the most important issues. Accessibility checks sit under Technical. To understand the number, see Understanding your audit score.
Downloading reports
The bar above the results has the download buttons:
- Full Report - the complete report in your browser.
- PDF - asks for the report language first.
- Custom PDF - choose which sections to include.
- PPTX - a PowerPoint presentation (Pro and Agency).
- Workbook - an Excel file with the data.
The More menu adds CSV exports, an action plan export, and a share link for the audit. See PDF and PowerPoint reports.
Next steps
- Schedule the audit to repeat in Monitoring → Scheduled Audits. See Scheduling audits.
- Track the score over time in Score History, and compare two runs in Compare Audits.
- Find the site again any time in Portfolio.
