Google Maps ranks local businesses differently depending on where the searcher stands. A shop can be first for someone next door and missing for someone two kilometres away. The geo-grid searches one keyword from a grid of points around your business, the way a phone at each point would, and shows your Google Maps position at every point. It runs on your own DataForSEO account and is available on every plan.
Before you start
- In App Settings → Backlinks, under Backlink APIs, enter your DataForSEO Login and DataForSEO Password and click Save Settings. The same login serves the Rank Tracker, Keyword Research and the Prompt Tracker.
- Open Rankings & Visibility → Local Pack Tracker in the sidebar. If you do not see it, click Show all tools at the bottom of the sidebar: the Essentials view hides it.
- Scroll to the Geo-grid card, below the local pack tracker.
Running a grid
- Type the Business name and city as they appear on Google Maps, pick the Country and click Find on Google Maps.
- Up to 8 listings appear with their category, rating, address and website. Pick yours.
- Enter the Keyword to check, for example dentist.
- Choose the Grid (3 x 3, 5 x 5 or 7 x 7) and the Spacing between points (0.5, 1, 2 or 5 km).
- Click Run grid. The button shows the expected cost; the grid starts at once, without a second confirmation.
The search language follows the country you picked.
Grid size, spacing and cost
| Grid | Points | About |
|---|---|---|
| 3 x 3 | 9 | $0.02 |
| 5 x 5 (default) | 25 | $0.05 |
| 7 x 7 | 49 | $0.10 |
Each point is one live Google Maps search on your DataForSEO account, about $0.002 at DataForSEO’s price in October 2026. After the run, the summary shows what DataForSEO actually charged. Finding the business is one more search.
The grid is centred on your business. A 5 x 5 grid with 1 km spacing covers a square 4 km wide. Pick a spacing that matches how far your customers travel: 0.5 to 1 km in a dense city, 2 to 5 km for a business that serves a wider area.
Reading the grid
Each cell shows your position in Google Maps at that point:
| Cell | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Dark green | Position 1 to 3, inside the local 3-pack. |
| Green | Position 4 or 5. |
| Amber | Position 6 to 10. |
| Orange | Position 11 to 15. |
| Red | Position 16 to 20. |
| Grey, 20+ | Not in the top 20 results at that point. |
| Grey, ? | That point could not be checked. Hover to see why. |
Hover a cell to see the top 3 businesses at that point. Click it to open the same search in Google Maps.
Above the grid, two lines sum it up: Shows in the top 3 at X of Y points, and Found at X of Y points, average position Z where it shows. The average counts only the points where your business was found, and points that could not be checked are left out of both counts.
How each point is searched
Every point is searched as a mobile phone at that spot would search, and the top 20 Google Maps results are read. The map zoom follows the spacing, so a tight grid looks at a closer map. Your business is recognised by its Google listing first, then by its website, then by its name.
Google personalises Maps results, so a search on your own phone can differ a little. The grid is most useful for comparing areas and following the trend from one run to the next.
Earlier grids
Under Earlier grids the card lists your 10 most recent runs with the date, keyword, business and top 3 count. Click one to draw it again. Daylytix keeps your last 50 grids. Grids run only when you click Run grid; there is no automatic schedule.
Troubleshooting
| Message or problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| No Google Maps listing found | Use the exact name on the listing plus the city. Only listings with a location on the map can be picked. |
| Add your DataForSEO login and password in Settings | Save the login in App Settings → Backlinks first. |
| HTTP 402: the balance is too low | Top up your DataForSEO balance, or check that your plan includes the Maps API. |
| HTTP 401: login or password rejected | Copy the API login and password from your DataForSEO dashboard again. They are not always your website sign-in. |
| The panel asks for a Serper.dev key | That key is for the local pack tracker at the top of the panel. The geo-grid does not need it. |
