This guide walks through the Rank Tracker tab inside an audit: the summary cards, the chart and every column of the keyword table. For where the keywords come from and how changes are calculated, see How rank tracking works.
The summary cards
| Card | What it counts |
|---|---|
| Keywords Tracked | All keywords in this audit's list (up to 50). |
| Improved | Keywords whose average position got better by 0.5 or more since the previous audit. |
| Declined | Keywords whose average position got worse by 0.5 or more. |
| Stable | Keywords that moved by less than 0.5. |
| New Keywords | Keywords that were not in the previous audit's top 25. |
| Lost Keywords | Keywords from the previous audit's top 25 that are not in this one. |
| Avg Position | The average of the keywords' average positions. Lower is better. |
| Avg Change | The average movement since the previous audit. |
On the first audit of a site there is nothing to compare with, so every keyword counts as new and the change cards show 0.
Top keywords position history
The chart plots the top 8 keywords across your saved audits of the site, one point per audit date. Position 1 is at the top, so a line going up means the keyword is ranking better.
The keyword table
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Keyword | The search query, exactly as Search Console reports it. |
| Position | Search Console's average position for the query over the last 28 days. |
| Change | How many positions it moved since the previous audit. A positive number means it moved up. |
| Trend | Improved, declined, stable or new, using the 0.5-position threshold. |
| Clicks | Clicks from this query in the period. |
| Impressions | How often your site appeared for the query. |
| CTR | Clicks divided by impressions. |
| Sparkline | A small line of the keyword's position across up to 13 saved audits. |
Keywords that come only from the 14-day list show their clicks for 14 days and 0 impressions and CTR, because that list carries clicks only.
Filtering the table
Type in the filter box above the table to show only keywords that contain that text, for example a product name or "how to". The tab has no export; to keep a list, use the sidebar Rank Tracker or copy the rows.
Why the position differs from a manual search
- It is an average. Search Console averages your top position over every impression in the period, across devices and countries.
- Results are personal. What you see when you search depends on your location, language and history.
- Search features count. A result inside a feature such as a carousel or AI Overview link can count as a position.
What to do with a change
- A drop on a keyword with clicks: open the ranking page, check whether its content, title or internal links changed, and compare it with the pages now ranking above it.
- Many keywords dropping at once: look at the audit's crawl and indexing sections first; a site-wide change such as a redirect or noindex is the usual cause.
- A keyword near the top of page 2: these are often the quickest wins. Improve the page and add internal links to it.
